How Long Do Painted Kitchen Cabinets Last?
If you ask a cabinet refinisher how long painted cabinets last and they answer with a confident number — "fifteen years, guaranteed!" — be sceptical. Nobody can honestly promise that, because durability is not a property of a paint can. It is the result of an entire system: how the surface was prepared, what was put on it, how it was cured, and how it is treated afterward. Get all four right and a finish can look beautiful for a very long time. Get even one wrong and it can fail early, no matter how good the topcoat was.
Here is what actually determines how long your refinished cabinets last.
1. The bond underneath everything
A finish is only as strong as its grip on what sits beneath it. Most kitchen cabinets arrive wearing an old oil-based lacquer finish, and that old finish is the make-or-break layer. At Spray It Like New, the foundation is Zinsser BIN shellac-based primer, which etches into previous oil-based lacquer finishes for a stronger bond. Skip this step — or prime with the wrong product — and the finest topcoat in the world is sitting on a weak foundation, waiting for an excuse to let go.
2. A coating built for cabinets, not walls
There is a meaningful difference between a coating formulated for cabinetry and a can of retail trim paint. We spray Gemini EVO Eclipse, a one-component (1K) cabinet coating that Gemini describes as "1K simplicity, 2K performance." We do not mix the optional two-component hardener into the Eclipse coating used in our process, which means no isocyanate hardener is handled in your home. Purpose-built wood coatings are designed for exactly this job: they level smoothly, stand up to daily kitchen wear, and behave the way a cabinet finish should.
3. A real cure, not just dry to the touch
"Dry" and "cured" are not the same thing. A coating can feel dry while it is still developing its full hardness underneath. After spraying, our Gemini coating receives a controlled 20-minute infrared cure in our shop — and the Varathane Nano Defence clear protective layer applied over it receives its own separate 20-minute infrared cure cycle. Controlled curing is part of what turns a good application into a durable, long-lived finish.
4. A protective clear wear layer
The final layer is the one your hands, dishes and cleaning cloths actually meet. Our system finishes with Varathane Nano Defence, a clear protective layer with an aluminum-oxide-based formula positioned for scratch and scuff protection, applied over the colour coats.
Why finishes fail early
The flip side is worth knowing, because it tells you what to ask any refinisher you are considering. Finishes tend to fail early when the old surface was not properly cleaned and prepared, when the wrong primer was used over an old lacquer, when a retail wall or trim paint was substituted for a real cabinet coating, when the finish was rushed back into service before it had properly cured, or when there is no dedicated wear layer on top. Every one of those is a shortcut — and shortcuts show up months later, not on installation day.
What you can do to protect your finish
Once your cabinets are home, a little care goes a long way:
Clean gently with mild soap and a soft cloth; avoid abrasive pads and harsh chemical cleaners.
Wipe up spills and splatters reasonably promptly, especially around the sink, stove and handles.
Be mindful of sustained steam and heat near the stove and kettle — good ventilation helps.
Avoid slamming doors and drawers; soft-close hardware helps if you have it.
What our five-year warranty covers is our workmanship, including peeling — the way most reputable refinishers write theirs. Chips from everyday wear and tear are not covered by our warranty — or, as far as we know, anyone's — since they are beyond any refinisher's control.
Our honest promise, in writing
Instead of a made-up number of years, we offer something verifiable: a five-year warranty on our workmanship, backed by more than 944 kitchens refinished and 42 years of wood-finishing experience. We put our promise in writing rather than in a slogan.
If you are comparing cabinet painters in Windsor-Essex, Chatham-Kent or Sarnia-Lambton, ask each one about the four factors above: how do you prepare the old finish, what coating system do you spray, how is it cured, and what does the warranty actually cover? The answers will tell you everything you need to know.
