Proper atomization—the process of converting liquid paint into a fine, uniform mist of micro-droplets—is crucial for 1K and 2K (two-component) cross-linking urethanes, as it directly influences how evenly the resin and hardener mix, flow, and chemically react.
Uniform Chemical Mixing
Balanced cross-linking: A 2K urethane depends on an isocyanate hardener (a known carcinogen) precisely reacting with a hydroxyl resin to create a tight polymer network. Poor atomization results in oversized droplets, leading to localized areas of over-catalyzed or under-catalyzed material, weakening the final film.
Consistent stoichiometry: Fine micro-droplets maximize the surface area interaction between components as they exit the nozzle and land on the substrate, ensuring an even chemical cure.
Surface Defect Prevention
Smooth flow-out: Coarse droplets tend to clump, leading to an "orange peel" texture, dry spray, or uneven film build. Effective atomization allows droplets to merge into a flat, glass-like layer before cross-linking stabilizes the structure.
Solvent release: Uneven droplet sizes trap volatile solvents beneath a prematurely formed skin, causing pinholes, blistering, or solvent popping as gases struggle to escape from a dense, reacting film.

HVLP Systems

Best Uses: Suitable for large-scale projects such as exterior house siding, long fences, ceilings, and open interior drywall.
High pressure results in significant overspray and lower transfer efficiency (40% to 50%), leading to more material waste. Cleanup is also more extensive as long fluid hoses need to be flushed.
